Couple Charged After Using Racial Slurs
A couple accused of bias crimes against their neighbors were ordered to stay 80 feet away from those neighbors on Wednesday.
Paul Caliguire and his wife, Paula, are accused of using the "n" word toward their neighbors, as well as stalking and harassing them.
Jasmine Johnson, 9, who is bi-racial, was in court Wednesday and said the Caliguires have been harassing her.
"They called me the 'n' word and once the 'b' word," Johnson said.
White families who are friends with families of color have also been victimized.
"It's scary," 10-year-old Olivia Jurek said. "They follow me and they watch me and I don't feel safe in my neighborhood anymore."
The families all live near each other in Lake St. Croix Beach near Afton. The incidents escalated after Jessica Johnson and her daughter, Jasmine, moved in this fall.
Two weeks ago, neighbors say Paul Caliguire beat a black baby doll with a baseball bat while he was yelling the "n" word.
He then swung the doll from a noose.
Caliguire was arrested and charged with two felonies for harassment under the state's bias law. Paula Caliguire has been charged with two gross misdemeanors. Four families filed restraining orders against the Caliguires and for the past 10 days, they have not been allowed home without a police escort.
Stacy Fredericks, who has two bi-racial children said she is still worried.
"I feel our lawyer did good but me personally I am still really scared," Fredericks said.
The families filed restraining orders against the Caliguires.
For the past 10 days they have been barred from their home.
Under the compromise they can return but have to stay 80 feet away from neighbors. If they don't, they will be charged with a crime.
